Spring to Remember
Spring is here. And in many places, so is full-on summer. Even though the snow is gone, that doesn’t mean the spirit of the ski season needs to fade with it. Without any of that pesky white powder to distract you, we here at Alps & Meters have always made the transition off the hill still one to remember. Continuing to combine natural materials, classic garment construction techniques and contemporary technologies, our pivot to Spring remains the same in what we do. Let’s take a look into everything that Alps & Meters Spring Wardrobe has to offer.
This Spring, we are delighted to offer our first ever women’s lightweight collection for these warmer months. Our Women’s Sterling Waffle & Sterling Flannel were born from the sturdy stock of the first Western female skiing pioneers. Within the latter half of the 1800’s in the Western U.S., precious minerals, gold, and silver drew mining communities to mountainous regions with variable climates of Winter, Spring, Summer, and Autumn. During the Gold Rush of the late 19th century, transitional knitted garments became a staple of female pioneers joining their male counterparts in cross-country journeys by horse or the on the first transcontinental railroad to destinations such as Park City, Utah. Pieces like such represent a staple of Utah skiers on and off the mountain and found wading among the well-to-do of Park City’s Main Street.
Introduced just last Spring, our Touring Popover is tailored very uniquely with versatile qualities appreciated and demanded by the Gentleman Skier. During the early 20th century, skiing became the infatuation of gentlemen intrigued by the wonderful novelty and sliding on snow. In its transition from an efficient mode of winter transportation to exciting new recreational activity, skiers of the era, beyond a pair of leather boots and wooden skis, took little time to modify their head-to-toe wardrobes for use on-mountain. The 30’s, 40’s, and 50’s were decades of smart wardrobes composed of posh layers of collared shirts, knitwear, and woolen trousers that differed in only a minor manner from the high street fashions of the times.
One of our most popular Spring garments due to its a-symmetric characteristics, the Touring Polo is designed for the Alpine Sportsman. Short sleeve length and softer jersey knits of pique cotton delivered enhanced comfort while the refinement of its signature classic collar, when upturned, protected the neck from the sun while still adhering to norms of upper crust dress code required of the gentlemen of the day. Perhaps the most traditional piece of sport equipment ever created, the Polo shirt has been a staple of the Gentleman Skier’s wardrobe since the late 1800s where its presence migrated to the mountains from the posh courts of exclusive tennis clubs and the green grass of private polo grounds.
Our Touring Polo, blends the innovative characteristics of the classic 19th century polo silhouette with a unique mix of Forged Performance elements delivering maximum comfort and gentlemanly style to the mountain athlete associated with, and embracing the rich history and tradition of United States skiing.
