Fall/Winter 2020

Gstaad, St. Moritz, Megève, Courchevel - these are some of the legendary European ski towns that helped to define modern ski culture.

Steeped in history, these locations are bastions of proper alpinism - home to storied sports clubs that shaped the sport. Some of the most glamorous places on earth, they have also attracted royalty and A-list celebrities looking to find solace in the mountains and show off their fashionable side.

These places - and the people they attracted - served as the focal point for the Fall/Winter 2020 Collection.

THE ALPINE SPORTS CLUB

Men

It was during the early 20th century that the gentlemen of the polo field, tennis court, and rugby pitch transitioned to the slopes. Dartmouth College’s famous Outing Club and the Appalachian Mountain Club of the 1920s pioneered rich and historic club settings in which alpinists gathered to ski, race and regale the wonders of life in the mountains. Since their inception, Alpine Sports Clubs represented a shared set of values and united passion of alpine sport, and the members of such outfits connected deeply with one another in a shared love of skiing’s past, present and future.

WINTER ROYALTY

Women

Membership within elite military units and first class sporting clubs was reserved for the elite of society. Thus, the aura of exclusivity, in conjunction with the inaccessible nature of Europe’s mountain villages, generated a glamorous and fashionable atmosphere that primarily appealed to generations of royalty, nobility and celebrities of the times.

Skiing was adopted as the posh activity of the era and coincided with evolution of royalty as strictly political figures to those of cultural and iconic status belaying the advent of modern celebrity culture. In the early to mid 20th century, ski slopes became fashion runways in which photos of royal and celebrity ski trips were circulated widely from the lenses of paparazzi. In the absence of technical fabrics and an unwillingness to compromise high-class style, traditional skiwear came into its own as a unique category of clothing that was as appropriate off-piste as it was on-piste.
