Turkey, stuffing, and mashed potatoes. Apple Pie. A warm fire surrounded by friends and family. Snow and skiing. No time of year delivers the combination of sheer goodness as the holidays. The Thanksgiving Holiday is part homecoming, part reunion, and has cemented itself since 1621 as American’s true bedrock of timeless tradition.
Each year, the fourth Thursday of November is dedicated to expressing gratitude for “thank you’s” big and small. Big ones such as the reflection upon one’s health, good fortune, and family. Small one’s such as the possibility of the first real snow fall and perhaps an early morning ski on opening day at places like Jackson Hole, Wyoming or Sun Valley, Idaho. However sizeable the “thanks” each and every one of them counts towards a day of goodwill where generations gather in order to place the hustle and bustle of daily life on hold, to swipe right and power down e-mail and apps, to perhaps play catch on the front lawn, and if you’re lucky enough to live in a ski town to work up an appetite by sliding on snow and spending a brisk morning in the mountains before settling in for an afternoon feast.
