Sustaining Tradition: The ethos behind the Mountain Memories Collection

Look closely on the shelves of any skiing family’s bookcases, and you’ll likely find a dusty photo album of memories filled with sepia-toned polaroids and faded black and white images - snapshots in time of classic winter adventures.

Hidden in this archival treasure chest is a winter wardrobe history dating back to the days of rear entry boots, binding safety straps, woolen herringbone pants, denim, pom-pom hats, and boot gaiters. Turning the pages of these albums and reminiscing over these photos links the past to the present, keeping the embers of such memories burning brightly in a virtuous cycle of generational succession. Ensuring that this cycle can continue unabated is a core intention of Alps & Meters’ new Mountain Memories product collection.

Since its inception, Alps & Meters has adopted a mission to uphold the classic traditions of alpine sport. And like the long-standing and well-preserved memories of those family ski albums, the intended design of our garments have been focused upon crafting sturdy, classic, and well-made pieces that will last a lifetime.

Even the best-kept photos fade, however, and when considering both the longevity of our products and the alpine environment in which we travel and recreate, furthering the practical impact of the company’s mission throughout the entire product lifecycle from the point of inception to sunset has led to the creation of this assortment - designed to avoid landfills, nullify the practice of incineration and CO2 proliferation, while generating new forms of garment longevity.

Conceived in the pursuit of restorative and regenerative best practices, the launch of the new Mountain Memories capsule will explore Alps & Meters’ R&D waste to create an experimental assortment of products transformed from yarns, fabrics, and sewn fragments into new limited edition alpine sportswear styles with an extended life. Powered in partnership with Tersus Solutions, one of the world’s leading engines of apparel sustainability and textile circularity, the design of Mountain Memories is an incremental step of innovation on the journey of continuous improvement in sustainable design, development, and manufacturing.
